I believe it has a faster processor and has detailed taxiway overlays and the AOPA airport directory built-in. That said, the 396 is probably the best bang for the buck. Like the 496, it has the XM satellite weather which is an incredible feature. My GPSMap 296 has been a faithful companion in my cockpit for quite some time. The terrain alerts and detailed sectional chart type mapping is a joy to have in such a power-packed portable. It's a "helluva" backup if I have a vacuum pump failure or other power problem in the airplane itself. If your budget can afford it, I’d go for the GPSMap 496.
