Garmin Geek
Justin just called the latest Garmin blog to me — it features Justin and his family’s (father, brother-in-law, nephew and brother-in-law!) participation in the Conquer the Coast ride several weeks ago. Now we just need to get them to public the picture of Sara in her Baby Bjorn “using” my Garmin Forerunner 305.

Having both a Garmin GPS18 for my laptop and GPS 75 from the boat, I favor them. I also have the Tom Tom software on my Treo, but could use some advice from Justin: I’m looking to use a portable GPS on the experimental plane I’m building and need to start laying out the instrument panel. My first thought was the 296, but I like the idea of overlapping weather in the 396 or 496 — is it worth it?
I’m also considering a couple larger display models (AvMap) but haven’t ever used them … any thoughts?

If your budget can afford it, I’d go for the GPSMap 496. I believe it has a faster processor and has detailed taxiway overlays and the AOPA airport directory built-in.
That said, the 396 is probably the best bang for the buck. Like the 496, it has the XM satellite weather which is an incredible feature.
My GPSMap 296 has been a faithful companion in my cockpit for quite some time. The terrain alerts and detailed sectional chart type mapping is a joy to have in such a power-packed portable. It’s a “helluva” backup if I have a vacuum pump failure or other power problem in the airplane itself.

Justin,
Thanks for the advice. I’ll be using it in a VFR only experimental airplane that I’m building. Trying to come up with a budget instrument panel with a few electronics to make the pilot load easier. Besides the weather feature, the “backup” feature to keep me out of trouble is something that is appealing to me. Just don’t want to go over kill if it is something I won’t use. Thanks again.
