Tire Go Flat?

“No, but those three others just swelled right up!” (Jeff Foxworthy, I think Bill Engvall… I thought that didn’t sound right!)

Yeah, for I think the fourth time since we bought the vehicle, I’ve managed to pick up a nail in a tire on my Ford Escape Hybrid. It has nothing to do with the hybrid, of course, but the irony is I drove my Corolla for 14+ years with ZERO tire punctures (save a hasty meeting with a curb in college.) I’m starting to think that my habit of driving in the “slow”/right-most lane of roadways is putting me in the “debris zone” where my larger (SUV) tires kick stuff into each other. Ah well… just getting tired of constantly changing tires and visiting the shop to patch tires.

I should have known it wasn’t a rock when the clicking as I drove (windows down–weather’s beee-a-utiful!) didn’t clear up after a trip on the highway, which would have worn down a rock or dislodged it. Instead, I have a flathead nail with a couple millimeters of its shaft sticking out of my tire, surrounded by white dust (metal shavings and concrete bits).

It’s something about the magnetic field surrounding the High Voltage battery I think, that attracts nails (just kidding!), but honestly I’ve gotten quite a few punctures in my 2005 Escape Hybrid also. In my case it’s definitely not from riding in the “slow” lane, so I blame it on all the infernal construction around here. After 60,000 miles I finally broke down and bought a new set of Michelin tires, and (so far) I’ve been lucky.
BTW, as you mentioned in a previous entry, the San Antonio weather is absolutely fabulous these past days!

Bill Engvall … when he does the “Here’s your sign” bit:

Gas station attendant asks - Tire go flat?
Bill E - Nope, I was drivin’ along and the other three just swelled right up!

Thanks, Rich… I had a funny feeling I was coming up with the wrong name, but the neurons just weren’t firing. Guess I was wearin’ my sign for a moment.

Jenna — Howdy, fellow San Antonian hybrid driver! There are a few of us out there, though most seem to drive the Prius or Civic Hybrid (great cars, just not what I needed.) What color’s your ‘05 FEH? Mine’s the “redfire pearl” with color-matched bumpers. Do you have a favorite local shop for tire repairs, rotations, etc?
