My personal endpoint for breastfeeding was always "at least six months or until she gets teeth." At 7 months we switched from exclusive breastfeeding (with occasional supplementation) to nursing simply overnight, bedtime and first thing in the morning. As for 4 year olds nursing... at least the pro is you can reason with them not to chomp down.
