Bragging on Justin for a Change (vs. Sara)

From Justin:

—-
Took the plunge and traded a 1/2-ton pickup truck for a 30lb mountain bike for the commute to work this morning.

It was quite the experience, here’s my blog post:
Bike Geek: A carbon-free day…

When it was all said and done, with 26 miles or so of riding, I saved two gallons of gas and burned 1500 calories instead.

Not bad!

Just had to brag on him. Like everything that involves other people, he has to be a very attentive rider.

Always give cyclists enough room–those bike lanes are only as wide as our body’s broadest part (shoulders) plus a tiny bit of “wiggle room”…if that… usually there’s broken glass, metal, etc. that 120psi bike tires can’t hit occupying several inches or more of some of the lane in places. Also remember bicyclists can and legally should take the lane when they cannot cycle safely in a bike lane (such as when going straight through an intersection that has a right turn lane; bike lane puts the cyclist inside the turning traffic, when they want to be to the left of the turning traffic so they can go straight on the green light.)

Thanks for the support, hon! Just read an article about how people will react to $5 or even $6 a gallon, which is apparently not outside the realm of reality.

It’s nice to know we have ways of “fighting back” while at the same time improving our health/environment.

I urge anyone living within 10-15 miles of their job to at least CONSIDER the possibility of what it would take to bike to work. You may find there are bike paths or back roads that make such a journey fun and safe.
