Learning About Knees
So, I have an MRI scheduled for Tuesday morning to get a look inside my left knee and see what’s up.
The knee is a fascinating, complex joint. You really appreciate how well built we humans are when something fails to function as it’s intended. It forces you to start learning how you’re put together so you can better understand how and why your body reacts to a particular trauma.
On Thursday, I trashed my knee again. Friday morning — the day of our departure to Rockport for a much-anticipated whooping crane birding trip — the pain and swelling were hell. Justin was stressed, upset and frustrated, all for good reason: I couldn’t walk 2 feet without pain and profanities. I even broke down in tears and told him to cancel our reservations. But the Fates looked after us. Our hotel reservations could not be cancelled with a refund — we’d missed the window. And that prompted my total change of heart. We were going, dammit, pain or no! I realized the pain would be there regardless of if I stayed at home in bed or went on this trip.
I am so glad we went on the trip, even though it had its scary moments. 40mph on a boat in 2-3 foot swells in cold, windy weather… perfect recipe for disaster for someone with a knee injury! I managed to stay on my feet, after a scare [...] Since I can’t walk normally I was trapped at the bow of the boat after we got underway. I braced on Justin after the Captain slowed down a bit, but Justin disappeared below deck and I was left lurching back into the boat, alone. I finally limped back to my seat to a very apologetic husband; the whole thing had unfolded so quickly, he didn’t realize I hadn’t made it down the stairs with him.
Thankfully, the cold served as the perfect pain therapy — my knee and leg were numb from the biting cold wind. I think it’s the only reason I managed the 3.5 hour boat tour! And I’m glad I did because we took some awesome photographs and observed several family groups of whooping cranes, as well as numerous other bird species. I owe Tom & Darcy Moore (no relation) of Rockport Birding & Kayak Adventures a full-featured spread on WildTexas.com as thanks for their terrific tour!
