Researching Anesthesia

I like being “a little different” in most things. I love being a GEEK, for example. However, the following is one instance where I decidedly hope to follow the herd rather than being one of the 1-2 people out of every 1,000 surgical patients who lies paralyzed, but completely AWAKE, during a procedure they were meant to be out cold!

I do admit a high degree of interest in watching the arthroscope images from inside my knee as the surgery unfolds, but not enough to forego the usual course of events and get knocked out cold for the procedure — not that it’s even an option, in this case. However, thinking you’ll be knocked out cold and suddenly finding surgery has begun and you are both awake and aware — well, let’s just say that’s the makings of a terrifying and frustrating couple hours!

Yes, I’m still reading too much, although with adequate understanding of knee surgery now, I’ve “broadened” my research into general surgical topics, including anesthesia. ;)
