Day 29: New Normality

I’m beginning to accept that I’m living in a “new normality”. If I’m ever going to really get back on track work-wise, I need to understand that PT sessions, home workouts (strength-training and aerobic exercise), and occasional OS checkups are going to continue vying for my waking hours. That’s an adjustment when you’ve been self-employed, making and living your own schedule, for nearly two years. For the first two and a half weeks, I operated in “vacation/recovery” mode, and that was fine. But now it’s a problem because I realize I’ve made an ineffectual transition back to “WORK MODE”.

I guess in my head I’ve been thinking, “Hey, SELF, you’re healing so well maybe you’ll be released from PT and regular OS checkups in a several more weeks and then you’ll have more time again!” Even after I graduate from PT, though, I’ll need to continue my home exercise routine, and I’ve known that from the start. In fact, I’ve appreciated now having a clear reason (my expensive new knee!) to ensure I incorporate regular exercise into my everyday life…forever. So, it’s time to dust off my PDA that I’ve readopted from Justin (I’d given him my Dell Axim when I quit my corporate work in August 2003), and start scheduling myself until everything that needs to get done becomes habitual again. There can’t be a “Work vs. Working Out” decision process I have to continually go through every hour, because right now with a still-healing knee, the “working out” keeps winning hands down.

What’s a Hamstring Graft Operation Look Like? I’m glad you asked. There’s even a video. Watching the video helps me understand and appreciate where some of that nasty post-op bruising comes from! ;)

In other news… Cat Update: Amiga is doing fine and has shown no signs of illness since the episode Friday morning. I emailed a vet friend and he concurred with my layman’s diagnosis that she was having G.I. issues (a hairball’s most likely in her case; she’s not a vacuum like Blanco!) rather than neurological issues. We’re still keeping an eye on her, but for now we seem to be sick-cat free. {fingers crossed}

Weather’s been horrid nasty today, but Justin and I got out in it with his family (and half the rest of San Antonio) to enjoy the new Vin Diesel flick, “The Pacifier”. I’ve become a Vin fan ever since the Chronicles of Riddick and a rewatching of Pitch Black. The Pacifier was a lot of fun, even if I embarassed Justin by laughing too much and too loudly. I’ve become a theatre movie buff lately, and don’t mind enjoying what we’re paying through the nose to watch, I guess. ;)

Justin: “‘Red One’ is very tired.
Me: “‘Red Knee’ is very sore.
– Exchange between Justin and I after seeing “The Pacifier” today, and immediately after I did my leg/knee workout. The knee’s actually not that bad — a little tender, s’all.
