Day 94: Almost (Finally!)

I’ve never much cared for the self-congratulatory show each new U.S. Presidential administration puts on to mark its first one hundred days in office. However, after the obsessive blogging-by-day of my knee surgery recovery, I now fully appreciate just how much can occur in the span of one hundred days!

In nearly one hundred days’ time, I’ve … undergone my first-ever major surgery / experienced a temporary handicap / celebrated small successes / enjoyed the “don’t sweat the small stuff” philosophy (Thank you, Mr. Cates — my wonderful 7th grade Texas History teacher!) / adopted regular exercise into my routine, and literally shaped up / posted more blog entries than I ever had any interest to do before / progressed from being “married to my knee” to merely calling it up on the occasional rainy day to see how things are going. ;)

The best thing to result from my knee surgery has, without a doubt, been the changes its forced me to make in terms of my health and well-being. While I celebrate no longer falling repeatedly due to merely pivoting or stopping abruptly, and no longer having to coddle a painful Bad Knee, there’s something especially golden about unexpected improvements! :)

I’m a little over 13 weeks post-op, and I have yet to begin any serious local gym-shopping yet. In lieu of that, I continue exercise using my own resources: walking outdoors, using our Concept II indoor rowing machine, doing some Theraband ball work (hamstring curls), and endless repetitions of quad sets, leg raises and similar when we’re watching DS9 DVDs or other Netflix rentals. My muscle definition is going along nicely, and my hamstring strength is returning well though I can see how it will likely take a full year to return to the strength I now have in my right (non-operated) leg.

Today’s exercise, thus far:
Walked 3.72 miles at my now-standard 4mph pace. Later this evening, I’ll put in at least 40 minutes on the indoor rowing machine.
