Road Warriors

I’m cheating again. I just finished posting this on my Cycling & Mountain Biking forum, and figured I’d reuse it here. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle. Saving the world, one pixel at a time. Or something like that…

I joined Justin and the growing “bike gang” this evening for my first road ride through Alamo Heights and downtown San Antonio. The rides gather and terminate at the Alamo Heights BikeWorld store (but don’t let them catch you calling it the “BikeWorld Ride” — liability issues, and all that; they just offer their parking lot as a congregation/start location.)

Anyway, great ride for some much-needed cardio and plenty of riders so everyone can pretty much fall into whatever pace is best for them. Not too hilly, not too flat or straight or boring. Too many cars and other cyclists to be boring, anyway. :) I’m a mountain biker at heart, or want to be, since that suits my “outdoorsy gal” genes, but it’s still nice to hit the pavement and pound away on the pedals a bit.

The weather this evening was uncommonly cool, thanks to the thunderstorms-that-weren’t (rained somewhere in Texas, but all San Antonio got was cloud cover, winds and late this evening, lighting in the distance.)

Anyway, here’s the info. if you’re ever in San Antonio and want to get a cyclist’s eye view of the city, and in the safety of a large group of cyclists.

Alamo Heights & Downtown San Antonio Ride
WHEN: Every Thursday — Ride starts between 7:30-7:45 PM and ends around 9:45 PM
WHERE START/END: Alamo Heights BikeWorld store
APPROX. MILEAGE: 14+ miles, depending on exact route travelled
EQUIPMENT REQUIRED: Headlight & tail light, since 50% of the ride is done after dark; helmet
EQUIPMENT RECOMMENDED: Plenty of water, energy bar/gel, spare tube (just in case)

P.S. For those following my Knee Journal (sorry about the layout; bug that needs to be squashed, still), the knee is doing pretty good. I got some pain on the lateral meniscus toward the 3/4 mark of the ride, mostly when pedalling uphill (not a steep incline, either). The whole knee’s a little tender at the moment, but it’s not swollen and it feels fine — it’s several hours post-ride and I still haven’t iced it, though I probably will before bed just for grins.
