Taking the Good with the Not-So

The GOOD 1.0: Congratulations and fanfare for my brother, who received official word today of his new job. We are all very proud of him, of course, but most of all we’re delighted to see him smiling (beaming, really) again!

The GOOD 2.0: A couple days late, congratulations to “Ski” (nickname) and her husband, on his promotion to the rank of Colonel! That’s a terrific accomplishment for a terrific guy (and not too shabby for a physician, a career where you’re still “practicing” even after decades! ;))

The NOT-SO: My beloved husband, Justin, is still at work today, making this a 13+ hour day for him. This, of course, follows on the heels {I accidentally typed hells, and that fits, too} of a string of such days — a 50+ hour week. I know how mentally and physically debilitating those kind of hours are, and I had it “easier” — when I pulled them, I had the luxury of my work largely involving interaction with a computer, not people, during the mind-muddying, soul-crushingly long days. As a usability professional, his job is the inverse — most of his time is “on,” directly interacting with people, and only indirectly with computers. In case there’s any doubt, computers are much less difficult to deal with after 12 hours of non-stop work. When you start to go bleary-eyed, a computer doesn’t look at you funny or give you attitude (usually).

<mushystuff> I love you, Justin. I’m so sorry this week’s sucked eggs. I’ve got all the appropriate appendages crossed for terrific flying weather for you this weekend, and whatever else you have planned. I do hope restful slumber is in there somewhere, as well — you need it, darlin’! I am glad you could escape Thursday night and join us for Mom’s birthday. Thank God for small favors! Still, it feels wrong sitting here in our empty house knowing you’re still at work. What I would give for Star Trek transporter technology, to initiate an emergency beam out of you! </mushystuff>

7:56 PM: Justin just called. He’s finally free of the shackles of another work week, and is on his way home.
