Well, Shit!
In the hopes that this entry will cause the space time continuum to return to normality (ouch — mixing Star Trek and Hitchhiker’s Guide analogies…), here goes.
My 4GB iPod Nano is missing.
While there is a possibility I lost it, I have looked everywhere it could possibly be (it certainly feels that way, anyway) and cleaned up everywhere it could have possibly been, twice, just in case.
I have a strong suspicion that not only is my Nano missing, it was stolen.
It was stolen at a car wash I already felt guilty for us buying an annual membership to (because I *like* washing my own car, and I feel weird if someone else — especially a stranger — does it for me.)
And I tipped them! For stealing my iPod!
Like I said, if posting this entry makes the fickle finger of fate tap me on the shoulder and say, “Go look under your cat, and ye shall find the Nano,” then that’s fine with me. Right now, I just want the damned thing back. Couldn’t care less about the songs on it — random mix from the 65+ GB of tunes we have here, and probably not much a 16-19 year old can use to woo a girlfriend with.

Ugh. We had a similar experience when we couldn’t find the remote for the DVD player in our Pilot. We noticed it was missing the day after a car wash and tore the Pilot apart looking for it.
And, frankly, that is the bitch of it. Am I fairly confident that someone at the car wash swiped it? Yeah. Do I know it? Of course not… even though we are talking about an item that otherwise never leaves the vehicle.
Car washes should just change those damn disclaimers that say “Not responsible for valuables left in vehicle” to say “We’ll probably steal your shit.” At least then people would have a fighting chance to keep their stuff. And trusting people like ourselves would apply an appropriate level of distrust on those employees.
…
Okay, did some surfing:

At first blush, it appears the car wash industry acknowledges its increased propensity for employee theft and offers owners of such businesses methods of detecting theft.
You might go back to the car wash and ask if they do video surveillance and if you can review the tape of your vehicle getting cleaned (out!).
