A World Gone Mad!

I have not really followed the evolution of personal gaming consoles — the last one we purchased (and still own) was a SEGA Dreamcast. That said, I know the graphics and other capabilities of the systems have advanced quite significantly since our Dreamcast was the very short-lived darling of the industry. And, yes, the PlayStation 3 does look like it will rock your socks off, BUT…

People standing in line for more than 3 days on the off chance they will get one of the 400,000 units Sony made available nationwide?

A $700 retail-priced system easily going for $1,000-$4,500 on eBay the day after launch?

I hope there aren’t any parents out there shelling out a couple grant on a gaming system for their kid? Buy them a damned personal computer or laptop, for that kind of cash!

I suspect the market is driven by young professionals and college students willing to forego a Spring Break trip to pick up the “hottest gaming system ever”. I know if we still had the expendible funds we had when I also worked in corporate America, it might be on Justin’s and my wishlist, but only after the initial craze died down.

I was wondering what that line wrapping around Best Buy was all about. With the camera crew and the police officer, I thought something serious had happened, a bomb threat or something. I didn’t even know the PS3 was being launched. Maybe I have to turn in my Geek Card?

Amen… to say nothing of the games themselves, running $60-80 nowadays. (And *that’s* to say nothing of how it’s even worse over here in Europe… it’s not uncommon to pay half again the US cost on electronics and the like.) I’ve been a lifelong gamer and always will be, and we’ll probably swing a Wii for Xmas (the only one of the next-gen consoles coming out at a reasonable price, *and* the only one that feels like it’s doing something new and not just offering prettier rehashes of the same old), but for the most part the gaming world is one we just can’t afford to keep up with.
