Winter’s Arrived

Typically tropical San Antonio, Texas, is finally beginning to feel slightly winter-like. Here’s this week’s weather forecast.

I’ve actually brought all my potted plants in the past two nights because I’ve found they need some adjustment period before the weather nears freezing (32 degrees Fahrenheit). Yes, my Texas plants are wusses that way. The native plants — sages, Mexican heather, salvias and mountain laurel — they all hold their own and live in the ground. Some will die back to the ground and get a good pruning in early spring, others just drop some leaves and settle in for one real cold month we ever have (January).

I haven’t bought more fire logs yet. I admit as a Texan, the moment the daytime temperature dropped below 60, I christened the fireplace for another year by burning a fire that evening. Winter’s not my favorite season, but I do love fire light.

The weather’s not helping Justin’s recovery at all. He claims to feel better, but you wouldn’t know it by listening to him — he sounds like a herd of elephants have taken up residence in his chest and periodically rumble around when he breathes, clears his throat or coughs.

With him sick, I’ve watched entirely too much television (more than my normal monthly amount, which is to say 10-12 hours total), played a lot more computer games than I ever anticipated, watched several feature-length DVD movies, and generally been wholly unproductive. As much as that bugs me, family comes first and it just felt right at the time, compared to holing up in the computer room/office pretending Justin wasn’t at home suffering through sickness as I worked.
