Oh, Fine!

So, you are eating well, religiously taking your vitamins, exercising and drinking plenty of water. But have you touched a home appliance power cord, artificial Christmas tree or Christmas lights? ‘Cuz those contain lead!

Sometimes, it is better not to know these things… especially when pregnant and after having put up both the artificial Christmas tree and the outdoor Christmas lights by yourself.

I am secure in the thought that it cannot possibly be that big a deal, gauging from all the Christmas cards I have seen featuring infants, toddlers and other young children holding — if not outright licking — lit Christmas lights. That said, it’s probably not a good idea to encourage kiddos to play with such things… for a variety of reasons!

Hey, when I was very little, I plugged a mangled power cord into a socket and nearly electrocuted myself — and look how I turned out… on second thought, start childproofing everything now, you haven’t got a moment to lose! ;)

I do think it’s very easy to worry too much, though… whenever we have Liam over, part of me freaks out every time he gets anywhere close to anything that could be remotely dangerous, even though I know it’s a good and healthy thing for him to explore (and even to let himself get a *little* hurt — no quicker way for him to learn what’s bad!). I also worry about all the things you can’t prevent, all the chemicals in food, germs in the air, stuff like that… part of me wants to Purell myself every five minutes, and part of me thinks that the world’s getting way too overantibacterialised (did I just make up a word?) for its own good, breeding super-resistant germs and weakening everyone’s, especially children’s, immune systems… I go through a hundred little worries just watching the lil’ guy for an hour or two, and I can only imagine what his mom & dad go through. My respect for parenthood knows no bounds, at any rate! :)

From the link: “Avoid lights made in China and other foreign countries, where there are no restrictions against the use of lead in consumer products.”

Have these guys actually tried to buy something _not_ made in China, much less any other country? It would cost me $1,000 in labor and parts to make a string of Chistmas lights, but in China, it costs like three grains of rice and a bean.
