I May Not Sleep at All Until November 14+

As the title of this entry says, I may not sleep a wink until November 14th when I leave for the Kennedy Space Center (Cape Canaveral, Florida) STS-129 NASA tweetup. Thankfully, I am not alone in this NASA-induced insomnia, as several of my fellow tweetup attendees are exhibiting the same issues:

@Oceanchick99 Ditto! RT @Charizardi I’ve submitted to the fact that I probably won’t sleep a wink until late November. Thank you, #nasatweetup. Thanks so much.

Only about an hour or so ago (it’s 2 AM now), I was finally able to close Expedia, Southwest & various other travel website tabs for awhile. I have all the ducks that I can get in a row lined up until NASA’s Flight Readiness Review on Oct. 29th firms up the launch date. STS-129 has a very slim launch window. Pray for awesome weather & no issues on Nov 16th (current expected launch day).

In the meantime, send me any questions you want me to ask astronauts, engineers, rocket scientists. Post them here, on my Facebook wall, to my Twitter account (@Ageekmom) or email. Seriously!

And if all this Twitter/tweetup/social media stuff is greek to you, head on over to this excellent article, “What’s a Tweetup, and Should I Wear My Spacesuit?

Attend a Shuttle Launch in Person–YES!

Somehow, after never having won any notable contest in my life, I am one of the 100 lucky Twitter folks invited by NASA to attend the launch of Space Shuttle Atlantis (STS-129), currently scheduled to lift-off on November 16, 2009! Here’s my oh-so-professional first tweet on the topic (LOL!)

This Geek Gal is getting to live a dream come true–attending a Space Shuttle launch in person at Kennedy Space Center. I’m trying to be a cool cucumber, but considering I got the news 12 hours ago (per GMail) and my pulse still hasn’t calmed down, it’s apparently going to be a very long 27 or so days ’til launch.

I’m a huge space geek, so a large part of the excitement/stress is knowing that the Shuttle may not launch on November 16th as planned. In fact, they’ve already lost one of their launch days/windows (wait, make that two) in the span of time it took NASA to launch and close the tweetup contest. So, I’m already starting my prayers for good weather, no scheduling or hardware issues and no other constraints for launch. If they don’t launch Atlantis on the 16th or 17th of November, their next window isn’t until December ‘09. The good news is NASA holds its Flight Readiness Review on October 29 and that will (much more firmly) flesh out the hopeful launch date. Having watching so many missions live on NASA TV and, lately, Spacevidcast.com — and so many scrubs due to weather or hardware hiccups — I still remain cautiously optimistic that I’ll come home from Florida with my “I’ve seen a Space Shuttle launch in person” life list item gleefully circled, underlined, highlighted and checked off!

Where Am I Viewing the Launch From? Doing What?

From NASA via email:
“After checking in with your badge and clearing security, you will board a bus to the Launch Complex 39 press site at Kennedy Space Center…. Tweetup attendees will interact with NASA personnel while enjoying the use of an air-conditioned tent with video monitors, WiFi and tables and chairs. Attendees will have access to the grass area by the launch countdown clock and flag. Buses will return attendees to their vehicles following the post-launch briefing (approximately 2 hours after launch).”
*Woot*

Thank You!

All #nasatweetup attendees were responsible for their own airfare, lodging, local transportation & food. Donations were in no way expected and aren’t tax deductible, but I’m so thankful for those of you who helped a life-long space geek fulfill her life-long dream to attend a Space Shuttle launch in person, and on the 6th to last flight, ever, of the Space Transportation System at that! THANK YOU (You know who you are!)

Thank you for your interest in the Tweetup. Registration is now closed.

For the first time, @NASA followers are invited to view a space shuttle launch in person.

NASA is hosting this unique Tweetup on Nov. 15 and 16 at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The two-day event will provide NASA Twitter followers with the opportunity to take a tour of NASA’s Kennedy Space Center, view the space shuttle launch and speak with shuttle technicians, engineers, astronauts and managers. The Tweetup will include a “meet and greet” session to allow participants to mingle with fellow Tweeps and the staff behind the tweets on @NASA.

Space shuttle Atlantis is targeted to launch at 2:28 p.m. EST on Nov. 16 on its STS-129 mission to the International Space Station.

NASA is planning other Tweetups in the near future at various agency locations. They will be announced on this page and NASA’s Twitter account, @NASA.

If you did not make the registration list for this Tweetup, you can still follow the STS-129 mission and attend a space shuttle launch. You can follow the launch of space shuttle Atlantis on NASA TV. NASA also will provide regular launch and mission updates on @NASA. Learn about other ways to experience a launch at the Kennedy Space Center.

When will I know if I made it?
After NASA has received and processed the registrations, an e-mail with confirmation information and additional instructions will be sent to those registered and those on the waitlist. We expect to send notifications by Oct. 19, or sooner.

Does my registration include a guest?
Because of space limitations, you may not bring a guest. Each registration provides a place for one person only. Each individual wishing to attend must register separately.

What if the space shuttle’s launch date changes?
Launching humans into space is a very complex business, and the safety of the crew is NASA’s number one priority. Hundreds of different factors can cause a scheduled launch date to change numerous times.

If the launch date changes, NASA may change the date of the Tweetup to match the new target launch date. NASA will notify registrants by e-mail. If the launch is delayed for 24 hours on Nov. 16, Tweetup attendees will be invited to attend the launch Nov. 17. NASA cannot accommodate attendees for delays beyond 24 hours. Tweetup attendees are responsible for any additional costs they incur related to any launch delay.

What were the registration requirements?
Registration indicates your intent to travel to NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida and attend the two-day event in person. You are responsible for your own expenses for travel, lodging, local transportation, food and other amenities. Once you are on-site each day at the Kennedy Space Center, NASA will provide transportation.

NASA’s Kennedy Space Center is a government facility. To be admitted, you will need to show a government-issued identification (driver’s license or passport) that matches the name provided on the registration. Those without proper identification cannot be admitted. All registrants must be at least 18 years old.

Can I register if I am not a U.S. citizen?
Yes, non-U.S. citizens may register to attend the Tweetup in Florida. However, you will need to complete an additional step to receive clearance to enter the Kennedy Space Center. Please choose the “non-U.S. citizen” option in the state drop-down menu during registration. On-site, you will need to show government-issued photo identification, such as a passport, that matches the name provided on the registration. Those without proper identification cannot be admitted. All registrants must be at least 18 years old.

What is a Tweetup?
A Tweetup is an informal meeting of people who use the social messaging medium Twitter. This Tweetup is an opportunity at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
